Max Ali Cohen and New Photography

Max Ali Cohen (1903–1957) was one of the notable pioneers of modern photography in the Northern Netherlands during the period around 1930. He photographed in the style of ‘New Photography’, the modern, commercial style of photography that was gaining ground internationally at the time.

Max Ali Cohen

Max Ali Cohen was a member of the De Ploeg art group; he lived in Groningen and left the city in 1936 to set up practice as a doctor in Santpoort. He carefully stored away his visual art and would never exhibit it again during his lifetime. Following his death, his artistic legacy was entrusted to the Johan Dijkstra Foundation in Groningen.
