75 Years of History and Art

History

Objects from our own collection show where it all began: as a regional museum. Step back in time through authentic displays that bring a vivid past to life: a portrait gallery of the wealthy De Guasco family, a reconstruction of the militia room and a carpenter’s workshop.

Development

Follow the museum’s development from its early years at Den Halder Castle through to its growth into a fully-fledged museum in the former town hall, the ‘Oud Sjtadhoes’. Following a thorough refurbishment, the museum reopened in 1991. This coincided with the celebrations marking Valkenburg’s 950th anniversary. Since then, Museum Valkenburg has grown to become the jewel in the crown of Limburg’s art scene, without losing sight of its own roots. Firmly anchored in Valkenburg’s rich history, it is a museum in and of Valkenburg. ‘Here, young people develop a love for their own history,’ wrote the newspaper at the opening in 1951. In 2026, Museum Valkenburg is bringing the past to life using modern methods and a more immersive experience. Museum Valkenburg: ready for tomorrow!
