History of Drag

In ‘Drag in Amsterdam’, you’ll discover how drag developed in the city. From performances in theatres and cabarets to the underground clubs of the 1980s and the drag scene surrounding Pride. Events such as Hartjesdag on the Zeedijk, drag bingos, the Drag Olympics and Superball at Paradiso are also featured. Personal stories from drag artists bring this history to life.

Activism

The exhibition also explores the role of drag in activism. During the AIDS crisis of the 1980s and 1990s, drag artists used humour, performances and benefit shows to raise awareness of visibility, acceptance and safe sex.

Hellun Zelluf

In the Schatkamer, visitors can also view an extensive ‘Claim Your Space’ presentation on the Hellun Zelluf Foundation, founded by drag artist Hellun Zelluf and her drag family. The foundation played a key role in the fight against AIDS in Amsterdam. Through humour, creativity and benefit shows, they combated stigma and provided information on safe sex. Through unique archive material, you’ll discover how drag and activism came together in the fight for visibility, acceptance and support during the AIDS crisis.
