Kusukazu Uraguchi – videoinstallation Flute of the Sea

Until 8 February from 10 to 18 hours

Other

A document of its time and a tribute to the proud femininity of the ama — Japan’s “women of the sea,” who have been diving for seaweed and abalone along the shores of Shima for over three thousand years.

Kusukazu Uraguchi

Photographer Kusukazu Uraguchi, himself from Shima, documented the lives of the ama for over thirty years, from their diving and harvesting to their gatherings in the amagoya and participation in Shinto rituals and summer festivals. His high-contrast black-and-white images, with unexpected framings and vivid gestures, capture the ama in all their energy and strength.

Part of the exhibition Shima no Ama. No reservation or time slot is required for this exhibition.
